Civil engineering turnover to take a knock as building activity slows

The turnover in South Africa’s civil engineering sector would grow by only 5,73% this year, compared with the 25,1% growth achieved in 2008 and the 38% growth in 2007.

A decline in activity in the building industry has started to “spill over” to the civil industry, the Aggregate & Sand Producers Association of South Africa (Aspasa) and the Southern African Readymix Association (Sarma) said in its outlook for building and construction industry.

FIFA2010 Update

One year to FIFA World Cup kickoff

Thursday marks one year to the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and local organisers are confident that South Africa’s preparations for the tournament remain on schedule.

Brand South Africa has called on all South Africans to wear a Bafana Bafana jersey, or a yellow shirt, to fly the South African flag, to blow a vuvuzela and sing the national anthem on Thursday afternoon.

Construction work for the stadiums are progressing within the FIFA set target dates, despite South Africa’s economy entering a recession and the threat that the global economic meltdown might have a negative impact on preparations.

Gautrain project 60% completed

The Gautrain rapid-rail link project is around 60% complete, says Gautrain Management Agency CEO Jack van der Merwe.

The first phase is still scheduled to be up and running by the end of June next year, although it may be accelerated to wrap in May, in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The decision on this is still pending.

The initial phase encompasses the rail network between the OR Tambo International Airport and Sandton, and includes the stations at OR Tambo, Rhodesfield, Marlboro and Sandton, together with the depot and operations control centre located near Allandale road, in Midrand.
