AQUALIBRIUM: The SAICE-DFC WATER SCHOOLS COMPETITION 2010

Dear All!

I do hope that you will have an excellent 2010, soccer-wise and other-wise!

The good news is that DFC Water (Pty) Ltd is again on board as major sponsor of our competition! DFC Water (Pty) Ltd has now been involved as major sponsor for three years in succession and SAICE is extremely thankful. Only a sponsorship such as that of DFC Water can ensure the success of our water competition!

Branch efforts
I know that many SAICE branches have the water competition on their agenda and will be organising their regional competitions and I thank all our branches involved for their sterling efforts! This opportunity to engage with learners on our scarce water resources and the equitable distribution thereof, pollution and waste management, etc. is just too good to ignore - especially in view of the present debates regarding the ‘water crisis’, quantity and quality and management of the water resources in South Africa.

Please
All Branches not on board yet, there is time enough to join us! So please go MAD and Make A Difference to the lives of learners where YOU are! There is still time to change the lives of learners, who would otherwise perhaps never have had the opportunity to be in the running for an exceptional experience in the big city and of perhaps winning a part of the more than R20 000-00 (in total) for the three top teams! The winning schools get substantial prize-money and as from 2008 the educators of these teams have been in the running for a prize of R1 000-00 as well.

Ideas
Every year the Bloemfontein Branch hosts a workshop on both the bridge building and water competitions during National Science Week - congratulations! A great idea! They are also involving the local media right from the start. Should you need assistance with the media, please contact me for assistance.

Career guidance DVD
This is a wonderful opportunity for career guidance and to spread the message that South Africa is in real need of civil engineering professionals to provide the services to our citizens for a better quality of life! And to assist you in this important task, the SAFCEC-SAICE career guidance DVD, covering the civil engineering and construction team, is available from me - free of charge! Please advise if you would want to make use of the DVD and I will dispatch it soonest. PS The revised DVD covering the new (PURE) Maths curriculum and the writing of all three the papers, is again available - give me a call!

Award winners
Please remember that SAICE's two competitions, AQUALIBRIUM, the SAICE-DFC Water Competition', where learners have to design and construct a water distribution network system, and the SAICE International Bridge Building Competition had already received an award from the Council for the Built Environment - 2008 Award for 'Exemplary Youth and Skills Intervention' and 'For contribution to the Built Environment'. This kind of accolade is only possibly through YOUR efforts!
