ASSISTANT LECTURERS

Assistant Lecturers

Department of Civil Engineering - Faculty of Engineering & The Built Environment

The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Cape Town has an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching in Civil Engineering, specifically in the fields of: Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Materials, Structural Engineering, Hydraulics, Water Quality Engineering, Urban Engineering and Transport Studies.

Applications are invited for 3-year academic posts with the possibility of an up to 2-year extension, subject to satisfactory performance, in any of the above-mentioned disciplines of civil engineering. Successful candidates will be required to teach in the undergraduate programme. They would also be expected to register and complete PhDs in appropriate research fields in the Department – for which they will be granted generous provision of time.

Requirements:

  • MSc(Eng) or equivalent degrees in Civil Engineering (i.e. NQF Level 9; N.B. MTech is not acceptable)
  • Applicants must be black (African, Coloured and Indian) South African nationals

 

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver lectures, tutorials and practical sessions
  • Design, invigilate and mark appropriate summative and formative assessments
  • Problem-based learning facilitation
  • Assist with the administration of the academic programme
  • Register and complete a PhD in Civil Engineering.

Primary Duties:

  • Lead and manage all activities of the section that result in optimal lifecycle performance of the specific category
  • Successfully implement an integrated lifecycle asset management plan (AMP) for all water supply infrastructure
  • Develop, compile, execute and manage the section business plan that supports the departmental business plan
  • Motivate and explain AMPB to executive management
  • Negotiate with customers the forecast demands for water over a 15 year horizon
  • Manage your own staff and co-ordinate with other disciplines
  • Manage the planning team in: hydraulic analysis: planning on a systems basis: translating the AMP into a comprehensive project: providing technical liaison and support for customers
  • Monitoring managing of budgets, practice financial management and control
  • Manage the development of staff by monitoring performance, coaching and mentoring, career path and succession planning
  • Create and encourage a culture of team work and achievement through the application of frequent feedback and communication with staff and promote employment equity.

TECHNICAL SALES REPRESENTATIVE

Civil Engineering / Geotechnical


A challenging position to be filled in a well-known company in the field of geotechnical systems in Clayville, Midrand, for a technical sales representative, reporting to the Director.

We are looking for an energetic, self-driven individual with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the industry who has profound technical knowledge (geotechnical) with excellent communication skills and customer care ethics.

Key performance areas include but are not limited to:

  • Maintain, develop and expand business with current customers
  • Develop and implement new business activities to grow customer base and market representation
  • Provide monthly and annual reports and forecasts on sales activities
  • Provide technical advice and knowledge to existing and new customers
  • Communicate on various levels with customers – engineers, project managers, and technical staff
  • Develop and execute a sales and marketing plan
  • Provide quotations and feedback to customers
  • Follow up on quotations
  • Bring new products on the market

Job requirements:

  • Knowledge of civil engineering, geotechnical qualification or equivalent
  • 5 years’ experience in the industry, sales experience would be an advantage
  • Computer literate in MS Office package
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to build and maintain long-term relationships
  • Willing to travel nationally and within Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Planning, negotiating and organisational skills
